On The High Seas and other projects, (and a 3 day tragedy).

Well, we experienced some very cold temperatures over the past week, and like so many Tennesseans, we had a busted pipe.  We're not accustomed to such extreme  weather and our homes are not built to withstand them.  While ZORRO has been sawing out drywall and searching for the failed pipe, I've tried to get a few things done.

ZORRO was kind enough to take a break this morning and cut open my Quilting/Darning foot.  It's nice to have a Rocket Scientist/Engineer around for things like this.

I joined up with Leah Day and a slew of other folks around the world for the Building Blocks Quilt Along.  You can find it here:  http://freemotionquilting.blogspot.com/p/blog-page.html

We've been choosing our fabric and thread, sharing with each other and getting to know the group.  My fabric choices for the top are some silk/metallic fat quarters I've had for a long time and some Christmas scraps from my stash.
Silk/Metallic for my blocks
My squares for backing.
The Backing fabrics are some my Uglies that I'm not sure I would ever use in a project, and since this is to be a learning process, they will do well in this one.

I've finally picked out the quilting from True Love Knot and liberated it from the sashing.  It needs a good soak, tumble dry and press to get the tracks out of it.

Last, I have trimmed up On the High Seas for Myles.  Something I always dread doing.  I don't know why, it's so simple.  But the thought of slicing into my work always makes me cringe.  I've also worked on the backing a little more, so there will be a Sea sandwich next week and quilting will begin.  I also drew up a FMQ design that I will be using in the waves.
All Squared up!

My FMQ Design

So it's been an interesting week.  I hope you are all safe, warm and have no plumbing problems.

  1. Wow saster, what beautiful quilts you have going. I can't wait to see Myles' quilt finished. You should show some of your other works also, everyone will love them.
Isn't it funny how we both took something we learned from watching G'ma and really tried to master it. You with your quilting and any other type of sewing, and me with my cooking and baking. Sewing for me- only when I have too, although I have gotten my baby girls quilt top finished, and now I just sit and look at it, hoping it will magically complete itself. lol... And we both love to garden, so I think G'ma would be pleased with us. But she would love your quilts, oh my she really would. I wish we still had her State Flower Quilt and her Bird Quilt. I can't wait to see how the quilts develop and will probably ask some stupid questions about them along the way, but I'm loving your blog and will keep a check on it and your work. Bravo Saster.....

    1. I think she would be proud of us. Heaven knows she put enough effort into teaching us. My real benefit was having her to myself the year before I started school. That was the year she made the "Cherry " dresses! LOL. I hated those cherries LONG before I had to wear them!
I have often thought of the State Flower/Bird quilt. I wish I had it too. If I were a better embroider-er, I'd give it a go myself. I do have the appliqued Butterfly Quilt with the crazy quilt backing.I separated it so I could make 2 quilts from the one. But that is in the QUE...along with many others. It took me a long time to give myself permission to sew and quilt everyday that I wasn't busy in the computer shop. It's going well and I have such peace about it all. Ben misses me being in the shop all day, but he also understand how happy I am quilting.
Who has new Baby Girl? I'd love to see the quilt.

  3. I love the FMQ design! Wow, you are one brave woman, quilting on metallic silks. Or I'm just a chicken. Or both. :)

  6. Oh no Melanie, a burst pipe! You poor thing - I hope everything is fixed and dried out soon.

Those metallic fabrics look great fun - I have never imagined making a shimmering glamorous quilt. You are leading the way!

    1. HA! I'm not sure about leading the way Muv, but I'm going to give it my best. Some of the FQ's have so much metallic in them that I just can't FMQ them. I'll be posting the progress of this and giving my opinion on threads and whatnot. Right now I'm using Isacord because it's so light and smooth. We'll see how it goes.
